Right People, Right Place, Right Time
Workforce planning in health & care is often seen as people sitting in offices playing with models and spreadsheets,
but it is so much bigger and more important than that.
It is about making sure that we always have enough of the right
people with the right skills, behaviours and attitudes in the right place and time to meet the health and care needs of
our population. And with our population needing more and more help, and our workforce under threat, it has never been more important.
Everyone Has A Role To Play
If you think about what workforce planning is, you can see that almost everyone has some sort of role in it.
If you develop a workforce strategy, you are workforce planning.
If you have a conversation with one of your team about their development,
you are workforce planning. If you teach people a new skill, ask someone to come in early because you are busier than you expected,
change who does a task, get rid of unnecessary tasks, e-roster your staff, bring in agency staff - then you are workforce planning.
And yes, if you fill in spreadsheets to work out how many trainees you need, you are also workforce planning.
The Association of Health & Care Workforce Planning exists to provide the skills, information, approaches, documents, network
and support we all need to do any aspect of workforce planning. It exists to make sure that we do workforce planning as well as we can
to make sure that we have enough of the right people in the right place and time to meet the health and care needs of our population.
